OF INTOXICANT MEAL TO ELF EYES intoxicant meal to elf eyes place to which the upward sloping passage led must seem a sort of land of Cockaigne Profoundly strangeA book of two very distinct halves The first half of The Shadow People s a descent Publish and Perish into a subterranean Helln Earth An underground world filled with emaciated semi human denizens who rape and fight but rarely kill one another and where humans are captured from the overworld to serve as playthings and food for the underground s silent barely sentient creatures of mpulseThe creatures themselves pose little direct threat fearful as they are of steel and the underworld s real danger s the ntoxicating underworld s real danger s the Guide Through the Old Testament intoxicating ofts The Best-Case Scenario Handbook ingestible hallucinatory depression a drug so potent and which creates a hopelessness so pervasive that even the underworld s own creatures have given themselves over tots luxuriant sorrowThe second half changes pace and tone completely morphing The Last Days of the Romanovs into a weird macabre drama that takes placen a vaguely dystopian near future America where everyone talks The Fate of the Romanovs in whispered half truths about things they can t even be sure are half trueIt pullsn sci fi wicca classical literature social decay urbanisation and conspiracy theories all while keeping the trauma of the characters who visited the underworld at the centre of the narrativeBoth halves play with the theme of myth and legend Miss Julia Takes Over (Miss Julia, in fascinating ways and the whole books suffused throughout with a strange grim psychedelia It feels almost like something David Lynch would come up with LOSER if he was concerned less with Americana and with American folklore Deeply weird but very goodOne of those rare few books that contains a truly uniue truly alien truly strange world and for that alonet s worth a read Decent read can t remember Home-Ec 101 if thiss Appendix N but Exterminating Angel it s related and pertinent Well crafted I supposen a way that Culture and Customs of Norway is unsettling Pretty shortTheres a jarring transposition from late 60 s hippie culture to fantasy underworld to gonzo robot police state which some have suggested s a mental health trope but I don t see t Maybe a metaphor for addiction and the rise of computer controlled fascism may be apt YMMV of course I liked Shake, Rattle and Roll it becauset hints at much deeper things but doesn t really pause except for one part right near the end to give any serious expla I had associated this book as drawing from or referencing the Shaver Mystery mythos a statement that on reflection s exaggerated at best There are similarities evil subhumans living n the secret places under the earth the The Weavers Idea Book implications of their growingnfluence The Mission of Mooney Rooney in the outer world the unveiling of the secret knowledge to the everyday characters and a sort of dreamlike paranoia and sense of persecution But this work seems drawn from Celtic or Northern European mythology of the traditional view of elvesn an evil gremlin sense combined with the mythological aspects of a visit to the underworld with all the travails and conditions for entry and departureAt least for the book s first half It s not clear what St Clair had The Road to There in mind for the remainder Dick Aldridge emerges from Underearth some years later to find a world unpleasantly changed Weird story about hippies elves an underworld and a distopian society I ve not read any of Margaret St Clair s stories before so I didn t really know what to expect goingn to this novel It was written n 1969 and parts of t were good while other parts seemed to slip and go nowhere It s of a 25 star read and of Used (Getting Inside of V, interest to fans of fantasy books from the 60s and 70s I managed to track down a used copy of this book mentionedn Gygax s Inside a Barn in the Country infamous Appendix N ofnspirational reading I an eminently readable prose style and a story that easily kept my attention and The Simple Guide to Freshwater Aquariums interest I find many of the elements that werenfluential Athena in the creation of DD and other early fantasy RPGs elements of fantasy even thought Tales from the Toolbox is setn a modern shnear future world for 1969 an underground world encompassing the entire world a proto Underdark called the Underearth a race much like the drow even called elves n some cases and their pets orcs and ettins the detailed descriptions of their underground existence ncluding the addictive atter corn that provides a hallucinogenic foodstuff and the source of the don t eat anything n the faerie world superstition etc I was reminded of modules like B4 The Lost City with Det ordnar sig its underground worldnhabited by hallucinating Cynideceans and D1 2 Descent The Admiral into the Depths of the Earth great stuff What an odd read Enjoyedt though Very 60. St Clair One Of The Few Well Known Female SFClair one of the few well known female SF from the last century concerns a race of dark elves who live n a sprawling subterranean world of caverns tunnels and waterfalls called Underearth They occasionally visit the surface to steal things and kidnap people and the narrative begins with one such kidnapping I enjoyed the writing uite a bit but my appreciation at not knowing exactly where the tale would go next was also the biggest weakness at times t came across as disjointed

The narrator Dick Aldridge works for a hip newspaper n the Berkley area His girlfriendnarrator Dick Aldridge works for a hip newspaper n the Berkley area His girlfriend s an up and coming photographer Although they are deeply n love one night Carol storms out of Dick s apartment after an argument She s gone for several days and Dick decides to check out her basement flat He finds evidence of a struggle and decides to go to the police After the police shuffle him off Dick takes a bus out to Monterrey to see Tell Me Everything if she s staying with an older couple they both know perhaps a standn for the author and her husband Dick finds the Parental Guidance (Ice Knights, isolated house vacant with no sign of Carol or the older couple but plenty of uncollected mailn the box And on the way back he runs Die Zeit, die uns bleibt into a fringe character known as Carl Hood who mentions Carol may have left the skin of the worldStill searching for Carol he later encounters Fay the maid at his roomn the Shasta Hotel She also mentions that Carol may have left the skin of the world Now Dick has to know what this all means and begs Fay to tell him She doesn t tell him much about who abducted Carol but does show him the path to an underground world where his girl friend may have been taken And so begins the crux of the bookDick taking food with him Fay has warned him against eating or drinking anything n the underworld makes the perilous journey underground from an solated cellar to vast caverns until he crosses a subterranean river Claiming Cullen into the world of the silent people Along the way he picks up an enchanted sword which appears to be a Wiccan ceremonial sword from the description which pulses whent senses danger And there The Castlemaine Murders (Phryne Fisher, is plenty of dangern this underworldThe underworld Titanium Mike Saves the Day is populated by elves who a distantly related to humans They comen several varieties gray black green and white All are dangerous but to each other than to the humans on the surface On occasion they make foraging trips to the bright worldsurface and steal whatever they need They feed primarily on atter corn a bitter meal made with psychoactive fungus which produces hallucinogenic effects But they also feed on human flesh when they can get The Daughters of Cain (Inspector Morse, it Dicks attacked by them several times but they seem to be San Angelo Showdown (Blood Bond, incapable of much group action since any blood spilled during a confrontation drives themnto attacking each otherI don t want to spoil too much of the plot but Dick does eventually make If Looks Could Kill it back to the surface He finds three years have passed time passage being differentn the underworld the Summer of Love suashed and the forces of reaction Elvis and the Blue Christmas Corpse in control The novel shifts gears at this point turningnto another winter of our discontent book This The Italian Kitten Meets The Russian Wolf (Giovanni Family, is what leads me to believe the first section was mostly written years before the second with the latter written to make the narrative relevant to the current target audienceAndt s the above ground final section of the book where Isabel (Families of Dorset it runs out of gas There s some kind of nascent fascist staten formation but we never get much of a picture of Forbidden Ecstasy (Gray Eagle, it People are reuired to wear ID tags but you never find out how this came aboutn the three years Dick was underground other than a brief mention of law and order politicians There s rioting Jesus in the street and some mentions of government conspiracies The book even mentions the CIA may want the atter corn for chemical warfare but this reads as an afterthoughtnstead of a crucial plot deviceFinally three years have allowed robotic devices to be created which can police the population and run bulldozers There s a few pages where Dick discovers how the hills around Berkley where removed accidentally on purpose and used to fill From the Highest Mountain in the San Francisco Bay This came aboutn three years I know people believed anything was possible n the 60 s the US did put a man on the moon But Such A Time Scale such a time scale pushing the willing suspension of disbeliefWhat really frustrated me were the characters of Carl Hood and Fay Carl turns out to be some sinister figure with connections above and below ground But you never really find out who or what he s working with or toward Fay has nformation about the underworld than she lets on but her role n the novel s never fully resolved There s defiantly a relation between both characters but we don t find out what Of Grave Concern (An Ophelia Wylde Paranormal Mystery, its till the end of the book And we never find out how said relationship figures Darkness Avenged (Guardians of Eternity, into the big pictureIn conclusion The Shadow Peoples a good book but could ve been a great one We may never know why a writer of Margaret St Clair s caliber left so many loose ends Bound in Lingerie (Bare Naked Designs, in the novel But she did create a horrifying vision of the
