Summary The Shadow People

Weird fiction ndeed Published n 1969 this novel from Margaret St Clair One Of The Few Well Known Female SF Clair one of the few well known female SF from the last century concerns a race of dark elves who live n a sprawling subterranean world of caverns tunnels and waterfalls called Underearth They occasionally visit the surface to steal things and kidnap people and the narrative begins with one such kidnapping I enjoyed the writing uite a bit but my appreciation at not knowing exactly where the tale would go next was also the biggest weakness at times t came across as disjointed and meandering Still I was never bored with this very odd meandering Still I was never bored with this very odd dated story 35 stars Ad copy lie THE INVASION OF THE HALLUCINOGENIC PEOPLE FROM UNDEREARTH They had existed from time mmemorial hidden The Succubus in a space warp far beneath the surface of the earth Until now their only form of nourishment had been a strange hallucinogenic grain Now they hungered for human flesh The earth was to be their stockyards and mankind their meat Of this the entire back cover copy only the second sentences not a lie either outright or by The Bitchy Waiter: Tales, Tips Trials from a Life in Food Service implication The front cover says They came from the Underearth to take over the world This toos a lie by Dictionary of Misinformation implication The securityn a world out of control Two worlds actually each representing a side n St Clair s perception of the world or the US n 1969 the hippies where else underground and the Man oppressive government on the surface Others have said that the story falters The Wise Man's Fear (The Kingkiller Chronicle, Book 2) in the second half the half spent above ground Certainlyt does f all St Clair s Driven (Full Throttle, interestedn Harrisons Principles of Internal Medicine is the strangeness of Underearth and the creatures who populatet But she s after something else something And to her credit she goes for t blasting both sides with eual venom I mention this only because I think t s worthwhile to stick with the book to the end and because My Dead Pets Are Interesting it s easy not to What sells the book to the genre fan and this story contains elements of fantasy horror the occult and even science fictions Underearth Fortunately this all by Heat It Up (Out of Uniform, itself makes the book worthwhile Yest s that weird But f that s all you re n for then you ll be left unsatisfied Although Guys Like Girls Who . . . in a shadowy dystopian sort of way the first halfs really a story unto O Mistério do Lago (Inspetor Erlendur, itself about a guy who s life suddenly spins out of control gets worse beforet gets better then ultimately spins out of control again Art lie The cover art has nothing whatsoever to do with the story Yes a sword figures n the plot And Yes It Is Called yes t Tristes trópicos is called s sword But any resemblance to the kind of sword and sorcery conjured up by the artworks just that superficial Clearly given the fact that almost nothing on the covers of this book Pax Indica is true the publishers Dell had little faithn A Modest Independence (Parish Orphans of Devon, it selling onts own merits Make of that what you will but I think The Broken Sword (Forever King, it s a shame For those who enjoy dark fantasy and the occult I think reading The Shadow Peoples time well spent Very definitely a creature of 1969 Berkeley CA written by one of the elder stateswomen of SF writing at the time this s a tightly written urban horror fantasy novel Kind of a cross between the films Labyrinth The Descent and Strange Days although t preceded all three There are other reviews that go The Witches of Eastwick (Eastwick into great length about how the book s Margaret Sinclair turned to writing booksn the 1960 s I don t know why her short story output declines after 1960 but I think EGGcellent Joke Book it may have had to do with monetary reasons Science writing this novelBut enough with my speculations Dame St Clair Heaven (Heaven Sent, is no longer with us so she can t clear up all my wondering about her motivationsThe Sha. THE INVASION OF THE HALLUCINOGENIC PEOPLE FROM UNDEREARTHThey had existed from timemmemorial hidden n a space warp far. ,
Dow People begins with the Summer of Love n California although no specific years are given The narrator Dick Aldridge works for a hip newspaper n the Berkley area His girlfriend narrator Dick Aldridge works for a hip newspaper n the Berkley area His girlfriend s an up and coming photographer Although they are deeply n love one night Carol storms out of Dick s apartment after an argument She s gone for several days and Dick decides to check out her basement flat He finds evidence of a struggle and decides to go to the police After the police shuffle him off Dick takes a bus out to Monterrey to see Tell Me Everything if she s staying with an older couple they both know perhaps a standn for the author and her husband Dick finds the Parental Guidance (Ice Knights, isolated house vacant with no sign of Carol or the older couple but plenty of uncollected mailn the box And on the way back he runs Die Zeit, die uns bleibt into a fringe character known as Carl Hood who mentions Carol may have left the skin of the worldStill searching for Carol he later encounters Fay the maid at his roomn the Shasta Hotel She also mentions that Carol may have left the skin of the world Now Dick has to know what this all means and begs Fay to tell him She doesn t tell him much about who abducted Carol but does show him the path to an underground world where his girl friend may have been taken And so begins the crux of the bookDick taking food with him Fay has warned him against eating or drinking anything n the underworld makes the perilous journey underground from an solated cellar to vast caverns until he crosses a subterranean river Claiming Cullen into the world of the silent people Along the way he picks up an enchanted sword which appears to be a Wiccan ceremonial sword from the description which pulses whent senses danger And there The Castlemaine Murders (Phryne Fisher, is plenty of dangern this underworldThe underworld Titanium Mike Saves the Day is populated by elves who a distantly related to humans They comen several varieties gray black green and white All are dangerous but to each other than to the humans on the surface On occasion they make foraging human flesh when they can get The Daughters of Cain (Inspector Morse, it Dicks attacked by them several times but they seem to be San Angelo Showdown (Blood Bond, incapable of much group action since any blood spilled during a confrontation drives themnto attacking each otherI don t want to spoil too much of the plot but Dick does eventually make If Looks Could Kill it back to the surface He finds three years have passed time passage being differentn the underworld the Summer of Love suashed and the forces of reaction Elvis and the Blue Christmas Corpse in control The novel shifts gears at this point turningnto another winter of our discontent book This The Italian Kitten Meets The Russian Wolf (Giovanni Family, is what leads me to believe the first section was mostly written years before aboutn the three years Dick was underground other than a brief mention of law and order politicians There s rioting Jesus in the street and some mentions of government conspiracies The book even mentions the CIA may want the atter corn for chemical warfare but this reads as an afterthoughtnstead of a crucial plot deviceFinally three years have allowed robotic devices to be created which can police the population and run bulldozers There s a few pages where Dick discovers how the hills around Berkley where removed accidentally on purpose and used to fill From the Highest Mountain in the San Francisco Bay This came aboutn three years I know people believed anything was possible n the 60 s the US did put a man on the moon But Such A Time Scale such a time scale pushing the willing suspension of disbeliefWhat really frustrated me were the characters of Carl Hood and Fay Carl turns out to be some sinister figure with connections above and below ground But you never really find out who or what he s working with or toward Fay has nformation about the underworld than she lets on but her role n the novel s never fully resolved There s defiantly a relation between both characters but we don t find out what Of Grave Concern (An Ophelia Wylde Paranormal Mystery, its till the end of the book And we never find out how said relationship figures Darkness Avenged
